Mathew Bosco Mwanjali

I am a physician-cardiologist and a founder trustee at Ultimate Family Healthcare Trust in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. I have concentrated my effort within the trust as in-charge of operations and programmes. I have spent more than 20 years at different international organisations as a consultant in programme, mainly in the fields of modelling of diseases, water, sanitation and reproductive health. I trained in medicine and later specialised in cardiology, working at different institutions in Europe and Tanzania. I also developed a keen interest on vascular tree physiology especially on vascular remodelling with application to the water and sewage system in Dar es Salaam.  Part of our success includes widely available water chlorination products in Tanzania.

Specifically, I was among leaders in a scientific team that brought forward the sustainable concept of water chlorination via a domain of social marketing in Tanzania. At present, I am among a team of investigators in both AISA-programme and under-fives stunting eradication campaigns. In AISA-programme, I am concentrating on vascular treee remodelling, with ultimate goal of saving lives from both incident strokes and acute coronary syndromes. Otherwise, I am a happy father of my two beautiful daughters scientists named Lisa and Yurii.

Kelvin Melkizedeck Leshabari

I am a biogerontologist currently serving as among founder trustees at the Ultimate Family Healthcare Trust. I mainly concentrate on the aspect of SUCCESSFUL AGEING programme within our FAMILY HEALTH concept. At present, I spend around 30% of my work time on design and executive functions (e.g. design thinking, verification & reaction monitoring) within the trust. I also spend another 40% of the time in clinical research (e.g. our Ageing Initiative in sub-Saharan Africa (AISA)). Part of the success stories on this agenda has been establishment of a proof of concept for a demographic transition in Africa (link: https://www.intechopen.com/chapters/77806 ) as well as opportunities and challenges associated with the demographic transition process in Tanzania (Link: https://www.emerald.com/insight/content/doi/10.1108/QAOA-09-2016-0035/full/html ) Besides, together with some of our research group colleagues in obstetrics & gynaecology within the trust, we have been able to provide a proof of concept for the application of ‘antagonistic pleiotropy’ theory in humans. Specifically, we have been the first to identify that female humans have survival advantages after menopause (a marker of reproductive senescence) from immunological perspectives. Details of the work can be found here – https://www.intechopen.com/chapters/80935

The remaining 30%-40% of the efforts spent on practicing old age medicine in general geriatrics, geriatric endocrinology (mainly diabetes, thyroid and metabolism) as well as Parkinson’s & movement disorders clinics; where I have accrued about 100000 persons-years and nearly 50000 persons-years of contacts respectively in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. My success story out of this agenda has been the establishment of a VITALITY CLUB for senior residents of Ubungo ward in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Data are underway to showcase (in a prospective fashion!) successful ageing in local African environment.
